A Tompkins County Sheriff’s Deputy who swore to uphold the law will spend time behind bars after being found guilty of perjury in Tompkins County Court.

Zachary Starner was fired after being convicted in March of giving false testimony under oath in relation to a criminal trial that occurred four years ago. Starner was sentenced to two months in jail and three years on probation.

Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten told WENY News Starner’s sentence, which was handed down by an Ithaca City Court Judge, was a “sad day for the justice system in Tompkins County.”
