A Utica man was caught Tuesday with a loaded handgun at Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, officers detected the loaded .45 caliber pistol among the unidentified traveller’s carry-on items.

The TSA informed the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority Police who confiscated the firearm and detained the man for questioning before he was able to leave for his flight.

Aside from the possible criminal charges, the civil penalty for bringing weapons to an airport checkpoint can reach $15,000.

Passengers are able to transport their firearms for a flight; however, the gun must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided case. The case must then be declared at the airline check-in counter.
