Off-Duty Buffalo Police Officer Accused of Murdering His Wife

Police Blotter

A Buffalo police officer has been arrested in connection with a homicide in Niagara County.

Prosecutors say 53-year-old Lance Woods of Lewiston has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Alexis Skoczylas. Woods is a member of the Buffalo Police Department.  Authorities say that on Saturday, Woods allegedly shot his wife while at home with his family, causing her death.

Woods was arraigned before Town of Somerset Justice of the Peace Pamela Rider in Niagara County’s centralized arraignment part and was held in custody.

Under New York Executive Law, the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation reviews any incident where a police or peace officer may have caused a person’s death, whether the officer was on or off duty. If that review finds the officer may have caused the death, the office conducts a full investigation.
