Nearly $400,000 is going to support the Finger Lakes Cover Crop Initiative.

The Departments of Environmental Conservation and Agriculture and Markets announced the funding will go to help support farmers’ use of the crops in each of the 11 Finger Lakes.

Soil and Water Conservation Districts from 11 counties will plan and implement projects to reduce erosion, protect water quality, and implement watershed management plans.

Cover crops, such as wheat, radishes, or sunflowers, prevent erosion, absorb excess nutrients, and filter surface water.

If you’re a farmer who would like to be involved with these initiatives or would like more information, you can contact your county’s Soil and Water Conservation District.
