A former teacher in the East Irondequoit Central School District is facing criminal charges following a police investigation.

According to the Irondequoit Police Department, David Burchell, who previously worked as an English as a New Language teacher, was arrested on charges of aggravated harassment and endangering the welfare of a child.

District officials said they first became aware of a concern involving Burchell in late January. After conducting a brief internal review, administrators contacted police to begin a criminal investigation. Burchell was immediately placed on leave and will not be returning to the district.

School leaders said they were legally unable to share information publicly before the arrest because the case was under active investigation and releasing details could have interfered with law enforcement’s work.

In a statement, the district emphasized that student safety and well-being remain its top priorities and said it will continue to cooperate fully with investigators.

Police have not released additional details about the allegations. The case remains under investigation.
