A Penn Yan man has been charged following a months-long investigation into suspected drug activity at a shared residence.

Police say 59-year-old William A. Hamilton Jr. was arrested on July 30 in connection with a February 20 incident, when officers were alerted to drugs found in an unlocked cabinet in a common area of a residence Hamilton frequently used.

Inside the cabinet, police found narcotic paraphernalia and a crystalline substance, which was sent for lab testing. The substance later tested positive for methamphetamine.

Hamilton was taken into custody without incident and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was released with an appearance ticket for Penn Yan Village Court.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
