As hopes rise for an end to the shutdown, legal battle over SNAP benefits continues

A Lyons woman has been charged following a welfare fraud investigation conducted by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and the county Department of Social Services.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies arrested 20-year-old Melody Fish of Phelps Street in the Town of Lyons in connection with an investigation into the misuse of public assistance benefits.

Investigators determined Fish allowed another person to use her Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) EBT card to purchase food items without authorization.

As a result, Fish was charged with misuse of food stamps and petit larceny.

She was taken to the Wayne County Jail for processing and later released on an appearance ticket. She is scheduled to appear in Lyons Town Court at a later date.

The sheriff’s office said deputies were assisted in the investigation by the Wayne County Department of Social Services.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
