A four-time convicted felon has been arrested following a violent domestic incident in the village of Bath that left a woman seriously injured earlier this month.

According to the Village of Bath Police Department, officers and Bath Ambulance crews were called to a residence on Geneva Street on January 13 for a report of an unknown medical alarm. When officers arrived, they observed suspicious activity inside the home and then saw a woman with severe injuries running from the residence seeking help.  Investigators determined the woman had been badly beaten and stabbed during a domestic dispute.

42-year-old Dennis Smigiel was located a short time later and taken into custody. He was charged with one count of Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D felony, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, also a Class D felony. Police say additional charges are expected.

Smigiel was processed and transported to the Steuben County Jail for arraignment. He is currently being held without bail. Authorities say Smigiel is a four-time convicted felon in New York State.

The victim was treated for her injuries, and according to the police department, is reported to be recovering.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
