Milton Lovett

Milton Lovett was born on September 7, 1934, in North Carolina, to the late James Lovett and Madeline “Maddie” Burton Lovett. The youngest of three children, Milton was preceded in death by his siblings. He peacefully departed this life on February 9, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of faith, devotion, service, and love.

Milton met the love of his life, Mildred Barnes Lovett, in grade school, and together they shared 62 beautiful years of marriage. From their enduring union came seven cherished children. Their journey led them from North Carolina to Newark, New Jersey, followed by Montour Falls, New York, and ultimately to Ithaca, New York, where they built a lasting home rooted in family, faith, and community.

Nicknamed “Munk” in childhood for his playful habit of climbing trees like a monkey, Milton carried that spirited energy into adulthood as a devoted husband, father, and friend. He gave his life to Christ upon joining St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, where he faithfully served as a choir member, supported church construction projects, and walked steadfastly in faith for the remainder of his life.

Blessed with exceptional mechanical skill, Milton found great fulfillment working in the automotive industry at Bill Zikakas Chevrolet, Pritchards Automotive, and Erie J. Miller Chrysler Plymouth as a mechanic and painter. His passion and work ethic inspired him to establish Lovett’s Body Shop, reflecting both his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence. Later, he and Mildred expanded into real estate, providing housing for students attending Cornell University and Ithaca College. A tireless provider, he worked long hours—often six days a week—to ensure the well-being and success of his family. Guided by their generous hearts, they also opened their home to foster children, offering care, stability, and encouragement. Even in retirement, Milton continued to serve his community as a custodian at Beverly J. Martin Elementary School, where he found joy in supporting and uplifting children.

As a father, Milton treasured time spent with his sons—hunting, attending stock car races, teaching lawn care, and tackling neighborhood projects together. In his leisure, he pursued flight lessons, guitar lessons, and showcased his musical gift on the harmonica. He also delighted in sailing his boat and fishing on Cayuga Lake, finding peace in nature and life’s simple pleasures.

Milton was known for his warm spirit, unwavering generosity, and sincere kindness. He knew no strangers, carried no grudges, and greeted everyone with a welcoming smile. His heart remained open to helping others, and his life was a testament to compassion, humility, and grace. He will be fondly remembered for his business acumen, discipline, thoughtful risk-taking, and for setting an exemplary standard of what it means to be a gentleman, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.

Milton was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred Lovett; his daughters, Sandra Lovett and Annie Lovett; and his son, Eric Lovett, Sr. He leaves behind cherished memories and a lasting legacy through his surviving children: Deborah Lovett Hall, Susan Lovett Bourne, Jeffrey (Mary) Lovett, and Cheryl Lovett; his sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Randolf) Mitchell; and a large, loving family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends whose lives were blessed by his presence.
