John A. Schoonerman
Newark/Rochester ---- John Schoonerman, 93, passed away at his home in Rochester on January 2, 2026. A private family funeral was held. Mr. Schoonerman was born on November 3, 1932, in Marion, NY, to the late Abram Schoonerman and Jacoba Herman DeFouw Schoonerman. John graduated from Marion High School in 1950. He worked on the family farm on the Owls Nest Road in Marion. John served 2 years active duty from 1956-1958 in the United States Army as a Tanker, the majority of which was overseas in Germany. Upon return from active duty, he worked for the Village of Newark, Town of Arcadia Highway Dept., and retired from Garlocks. He also had a landscaping business until the age of 80. For many years, he and his family raised and sold fruits and vegetables. He was an active member of Woodlane Community Church for decades.
Survived by his two children, Richard (Veronica) Schoonerman and Karen Curtin, as well as his granddaughters LeAnne, Nat, Sarah, Martha, and great-grandchildren Carter, Jaxen, Ella; niece Eileen Welker; nephew David DeRue; and several grandnephews. Predeceased by his sisters Cora DeFouw, Julianna DeFouw, Irene Minyard, Mary DeRue (Gerald), and niece Michelle DeRue.
