Joan Marie Scanlon Todd, age 87, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and formerly of Watkins Glen, NY, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family: Roland Todd and Robert & Sherri Todd.
Born on January 30, 1938, in Watkins Glen, Joan was the daughter of John and Pauline Scanlon. Later in life, she returned to Watkins Glen, where she lived for many years with her husband, Frederick Todd, of Montour Falls, NY. Joan cherished her time spent on Seneca Lake with family and was a devoted member of her community and was a Eucharistic Minister for Saint Mary of the Lake Catholic Parish in Watkins Glen and Saint James Parish in Trumansburg, NY.
A lifelong caregiver, Joan's nurturing spirit extended to both family and friends in need. She was passionate about dance and music, becoming a professional dance instructor at Arthur Murray Dance School. Joan also had a career as a special education teacher at TST BOCES in Ithaca, NY, where she positively impacted the lives of many students.
Joan found joy in outdoor activities, particularly golfing with her family and friends. One of her proudest moments on the course was achieving a hole-in-one—before her son Robert, a PGA Professional.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband, her brother, Bill Scanlon, her twin sister, Julie Mathews, and her sister-in-law, Kay Scanlon. She is survived by her sons, Roland (Laurie) Todd and Robert (Sherri) Todd; her brother, Jack Scanlon; her grandchildren, Nichole (Tim) Furey, Ashley (Ian) Barczewski, Madeline (Nick) Picco, and Ryan Hughes; her great-grandchildren, Caroline Furey, Hazel Malloney, Harper Barczewski, and Lucille Picco; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 10:00 am at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, 905 N. Decatur St., Watkins Glen, NY. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
