HORSEHEADS – Janet J. Hallahan passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025, at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, New York. She was born July 12, 1937, to Margaret and Benjamin James in Youngstown, New York, graduating from Lewiston Porter Senior High School in 1955. Following high school, she attended SUNY Oneonta and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1959. Janet moved to Corning and dedicated 33 years teaching home economics to the students of Corning Free Academy from 1959 until her retirement in 1992. On August 19, 1961, she married James J. Hallahan in Youngstown, NY.

She was a member and past president (2008-2010) of the Corning Area Women’s Club (CAWC), and a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Elmira-Corning (NY) branch. Janet retired to Hammondsport, where she volunteered at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum and was a member of the Keuka Yacht Club and Hammondsport Women’s Club. She remained in Hammondsport until relocating in 2019 to Appleridge Senior Living, Horseheads, NY. Janet was outgoing and proved so by becoming an ambassador at Appleridge. She enjoyed helping other residents settle into their new home, giving tours, and introducing them to the many activities available there. She was a member of the resident council, participating in the improvement of the facility for her and the other residents at Appleridge.

Janet was known for her colorful wardrobe, which she showcased as often as she could. On one occasion, she modeled in a fashion show at Appleridge. She loved cooking and baking, and especially loved Newfoundland dogs, of which she had many in her lifetime. Janet was an active supporter of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Branchport, NY, and Christ Episcopal Church, Corning, NY. She is survived by her brother, Jack C. James, Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps. (Ret.) of Silver Springs, MD; nephew Michael (Julie) B. James and their children Ryan and Owen of Sierra Madre, CA; great-niece Alexandria James of Anaheim, CA; many cousins, especially Peggy Tower Shear of Lockport, NY, Ann Tower Johnston and Audrey Tower, both of Youngstown, NY; and her beloved Newfoundland dog, Miss Lilly.

Janet is predeceased by her above-mentioned parents, husband James J. Hallahan (2016), and nephew Shawn James (2025). Friends may call on Sunday, January 18, 2026, between the hours of 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM at the Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home in Hammondsport. A funeral service will be conducted by Fr. Phil Kasey on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Branchport, NY, and a celebration of life will be held from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Appleridge Senior Living, Horseheads, NY. She will be buried at a later date with her late husband, James, at Glenview Cemetery, Pulteney, New York.

What a wonderful lady you were. You and your husband hold a special place in our hearts. We loved and groomed your Newfoundland and especially your last one, Lily, that lives her days out with us when you moved to Appleridge. RIP Janet. Hugs. Heaven gained an angel.

Mrs. Hallahan was a great teacher. I had her as my Home Ec teacher at CFA. I believe she had all of us Bockus kids, both my family and my cousins. I have always had warm thoughts of her over the years when I make certain recipes or when I set up my sewing machine to sew a new article of clothing or when I’m mending something. She fueled my love of baking. Thank you.

Janet was such a caring lady. My mom was a resident at Appleridge, so we would talk occasionally. I recently called trying to check up on her and left messages. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Janet was such a good customer of mine when I had Mending Your Ways open for alterations. She always brought me the most stylish and beautiful clothing to alter for her, and we had great conversations throughout the years, especially about a brother of mine who was her student. May Janet rest in peace! I will miss you! Florence

Mrs. Hallahan was a wonderful lady. I was one of the students that passed through her class during my time at CFA, graduating from the middle school in 1980. There were a lot of laughs in that class. During one of the bread baking exercises, I encouraged my teammates to add extra of some of the ingredients, positive that ours would be the best bread. She warned us of kneading the dough that, if done incorrectly, could create air pockets. Ha! Our bread had a huge air pocket that ran the entire length of the loaf and, thanks to the extra ingredients, was semi-raw for about a 1/2 an inch around the air pocket. When I admitted to her our mischief, she burst out laughing. I saw her a couple of times when we ran into each other since moving.
