James “Jim” Arthur Smith, 73, most recently of Martville, NY, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at The Commons on St. Anthony. Jim was born on May 14, 1952, in Auburn, NY, to the late William H. and Marion D. "Deeda" Smith. Full of life, Jim lived every day as if he were still 16—always active, always laughing, and always surrounded by friends. He especially loved spending time with his friends from the farm.
A talented and skilled carpenter, Jim had a gift for building just about anything. For many years, he proudly owned and operated Smith and Son Construction, working with his son William. Jim also honorably served his country in the United States Air Force from 1972 to 1978, where he received the Airman's Medal; this was a time of his life he carried with pride.
He is survived by his children, Sheri Woody, William Smith, Jimmy Smith, and Robin Catalano; his siblings, Brian (Peggy) Smith and Dawn (Larry) Waterman; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry on his legacy of laughter, hard work, and love. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased in death by his sister Donna L. Smith.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 PM on Friday, February 6, at the Port Byron John Cool Post 257 American Legion, 157 Main Street, Port Byron, NY 13140. Donations in memory of James may be made to the Cayuga County Veteran Support Fund, 95 Genesee Street, 3rd Floor, Auburn, NY 13021.
