William Smith Herons Defeated In Soccer National Championship Game

The 11th-ranked William Smith soccer team was edged by No. 1 Washington (Mo.) 3-0, in a hard-fought national championship game at UNLV’s Peter Johann Memoria Field this afternoon.

The Herons, who were making their sixth appearance in the national championship game finished the season with a 17-4-4 overall record.

The Bears finished the season with a 23-0-2 overall record.

  • WashU finished the game with a 20-10 advantage in shots.
  • Both teams had two corner kicks.

MATCH MOMENTS

  • Marjorie Plants nearly opened the scoring in the sixth minute, but her shot was turned aside by Sidney Conner.
  • Plants had a second chance in the 27th minute, that was stopped by a diving Conner.
  • In the 28th minute, Kirsten Nelson smothered a shot from Sophie Viscovich.
  • The Bears opened the scoring in the 51st minute when Ally Hackett converted on penalty kick.
  • Olivia Clemons doubled WashU’s lead in the 77th minute. She slipped a shot past Nelson.
  • One minute later, Gaelen Clayton tacked on an insurance goal.
  • Izzy Thors had a chance to berak up the shutout bid, but her shot was punched over the crossbar by Conner.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

  • Following the tournament, graduate student Lexi Hasbrouck, junior Ruth Hotaling and senior Ava Brazie were named to the All-Tournament team. Hasbrouck was named the tournament’s most outstanding defensive player.
