The Hobart and William Smith Colleges baseball team swept the weekly honors from the Liberty League on Monday.
Junior first baseman Sean Garvin (Westwood/Westwood, Mass.) was named Performer of the Week, junior Trevor Kimball (Amesbury/Amesbury, Mass.) earned Pitcher of the Week, and first-year infielder Jack O’Neil (Xaverian/Wellesley, Mass.) was selected Rookie of the Week.
Hobart took two of three games over the weekend at Franklin & Marshall College to improve to 6-1 on the season. The Statesmen dropped Saturday’s opener 3-0, then responded with a 12-0 shutout in the nightcap before closing the series with a 16-5 win on Sunday.
Garvin turned in a strong weekend at the plate, posting a .455/.500/.818 slash line. He doubled, homered, drove in a team-high six runs and scored four times. He extended his hitting streak to 10 games and has reached base safely in 15 straight. After singling and being hit by a pitch in Game 1, Garvin doubled and homered with two RBIs and two runs scored in Game 2, then added another two-hit effort with four RBIs and two runs in the finale.
Through seven games, Garvin is batting .440 with 11 hits, two doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs and 10 runs scored.
Kimball picked up his first win of the season with six scoreless innings in Game 2. He allowed just two hits and exited with a 2-0 lead. Among Hobart starters, he leads the staff with a 1.18 WHIP and ranks second with a 2.89 ERA, surrendering only five hits in 9 1/3 innings.
O’Neil contributed across the board, collecting three hits, three walks and five runs scored during the series. He has recorded a hit in all six games he has played this season. After notching one hit in the opener, he tripled and walked in Game 2 and scored twice. In Game 3, he walked twice, singled, stole three bases and scored three runs.
For the year, O’Neil is hitting .333 with seven hits, two doubles and a triple. He’s tied for the team lead with five walks and leads the team with four stolen bases.
Hobart returns to action this weekend with a three-game series at Tufts University. The Statesmen and the Jumbos will play a doubleheader Saturday, March 7, beginning at noon, followed by a single game Sunday, March 8, at noon.
