The Keuka College women’s basketball team came up short on the road Saturday, falling 50-41 to Russell Sage College in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
Emiley Anderson led the Wolves with 11 points for Keuka College (9-12, 4-9 Empire 8). Brooke Burd turned in another strong all-around performance, recording a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Green and Gold.
Russell Sage jumped out to an early lead, but Keuka answered to tie the game at 5-5. In a low-scoring first quarter, a jumper by Burd with 3:32 remaining marked Keuka’s final basket of the frame. Despite a scoring drought of nearly four minutes by the Gators, Russell Sage closed the quarter with a three-point play to take an 11-7 lead after one.
That late momentum carried into the second quarter as the Gators used a 12-0 run to extend their advantage to 20-7. Anderson ended the run with a three-pointer four minutes into the quarter, sparking seven unanswered points by the Wolves. Keuka worked its way back into the game but still trailed 22-16 at halftime.
The Wolves stayed within reach in the third quarter, but the six-point deficit at the break proved to be the closest margin of the second half. Russell Sage slowly built its lead into double figures as Keuka entered the fourth quarter trailing 34-25.
The Gators opened the final quarter with seven of the first eight points to put the game out of reach. Both teams scored 16 points in the fourth, but Russell Sage held on for the 50-41 victory.
Despite the loss, Keuka turned in several notable performances. The Wolves have now dropped 10 straight games to Russell Sage, which leads the all-time series 11-9. The 50 points allowed marked the fewest the Wolves have given up to the Gators in more than 20 years, while Keuka’s 41 points were a season low.
Burd added two blocks to her double-double, bringing her season total to 33, the sixth-most in program history. She also moved into sixth place on Keuka’s single-season rebounding list with 246 boards, surpassing her total from last season, and passed Pam Gardner for third on the program’s career double-doubles list.
Keuka College will wrap up the regular season next weekend at home, hosting Nazareth University on Friday night and St. John Fisher University on Saturday afternoon at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.
