First-year Hobart goalie Michael Johnson has been named Atlantic 10 Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Johnson helped lead the Statesmen to a 13-8 win over Canisius on Saturday.
In his collegiate debut, Johnson recorded 14 saves, including five in the fourth quarter. He turned away the first two shots he faced, keeping the game scoreless for the opening five minutes, and finished the first quarter with a .667 save percentage and a 6-1 lead.
Johnson is the first Hobart first-year to start the season opener in the program’s Division I era (since 1995). His 14 saves are the most by a Hobart first-year goalie since Max Silberlicht made 17 stops against Fairfield on March 31, 2007.
He ranks sixth in the nation in save percentage (.636), eighth in saves per game (14.0), and 12th in goals-against average (8.00).
Hobart (1-0) will start a three-game road trip Saturday, Feb. 14, when they face Colgate (0-2) in Hamilton, New York. The opening faceoff is scheduled for noon.
