The Penn Yan Police Department is warning residents of a nationwide telephone scam where callers are posing as U.S. Border Patrol Agents using a “585” area code.
Some of the calls contain a pre-recorded message stating “a box of drugs and money being shipped has your name on it and has been intercepted” while others have the caller informing the call recipient that there is a warrant for their arrest or requesting information in exchange for bitcoin.
Penn Yan PD is reminding residents to never give out their bank account or credit card information over the phone. The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Border Patrol does not solicit money over the phone and don’t use bitcoin, digital currency, or gift cards.
