Jury Finds Steuben County Man Guilty of Felony Drug Charges

A Steuben County jury found a Campbell man guilty of two Class B felonies related to methamphetamine possession and sale. The verdict came after a week-long trial that concluded on Friday.

57-year-old Terry Champion was convicted of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree and Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree. The charges stem from an incident on May 30, 2024, when Champion sold more than seven grams of methamphetamine to an informant working with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. The transaction took place at Champion’s home in the Town of Campbell.

The investigation was led by Steuben County Sheriff’s Investigator Marcus Smith, with assistance from other Sheriff’s Office investigators and Bath Village Police Investigator Michael Jackson. Several law enforcement officers, including Investigators Brook Payne and Sheppard, testified during the trial. An expert from the New York State Police Lab also confirmed the identity and quantity of the drugs presented to the jury.

District Attorney Brooks T. Baker, who prosecuted the case, praised the verdict, saying, “Terry Champion was a wholesale level dealer supplying lower-level dealers. This conviction removes a dangerous drug dealer from our streets and helps protect our community.” Baker also commended the collaboration between the Sheriff’s Office, Bath Village Police, and the District Attorney’s Office for their professionalism and dedication throughout the investigation and trial.

Champion faces up to nine years in prison. He was remanded to the Steuben County Jail without bail and is scheduled for sentencing before Steuben County Court Judge Mathew McCarthy on April 25.
