Ithaca Residents Urged to Follow Snow Removal Rules

City of Ithaca officials are reminding residents and property owners of their responsibility to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice throughout the winter season.

In a statement released Friday, officials said city code requires sidewalks to be kept free of snow and ice to help protect pedestrians and ensure safe travel during and after winter storms.

Under city regulations, property owners who fail to clear sidewalks within the required timeframe may be charged if the city removes the snow. Officials said the rules are meant to maintain accessible routes for children walking to school, older adults, and residents with mobility challenges.

The city also reminded residents that odd-even parking regulations remain in effect during winter weather. Drivers are required to park on the even-numbered side of the street on even-numbered days and the odd-numbered side on odd-numbered days to allow plow crews to clear roads efficiently.

City officials said vehicles parked on the wrong side of the street can slow snow removal and create safety hazards.

The city’s Ithaca Department of Public Works remains fully mobilized during winter storms. Officials said keeping sidewalks and streets safe is a shared responsibility and encouraged residents to assist neighbors who may have difficulty clearing snow.

Uncleared sidewalks can be reported by email to the city’s Building Division at [email protected]. Reports should include contact information and the address of the property in question.

City leaders said cooperation from residents is essential to maintaining safety and accessibility throughout the winter season.
