Waterloo Couple Honored At The Start of Memorial Day Weekend

Chris and Jane Shaffer’s volunteer involvement in their hometown is impressive, so the couple has been named winners of the 2025 Henry C. Welles Award from the Waterloo Library & Historical Society.

Jane says it’s a community effort-

 

 

The award is named after the downtown Waterloo drug store owner believed to be the co-founder of the first Memorial Day observance here in 1866, along with Gen. John Murray. The award honors those who “embody the character and commitment of the founder of Memorial Day toward the betterment of our community.”
