A robbery arrest in Seneca County has its sheriff calling out public safety issues associated with bail reform.
According to Sheriff Tim Thompson, three robberies occurred over the weekend in the Town of Tyre. An investigation into the incidents led to the Sunday arrest of Ron Poore. The 40-year-old Maine man is also accused of operating a stolen vehicle and attempting to flee law enforcement before being apprehended.
Poore was charged with two counts of robbery and one petit larceny, along with a single count of attempted robbery, and held at the jail to await arraignment. After his arraignment, Poore was released on appearance tickets.
Thompson believes this showcases the failure of bail reform and the need for public safety discretion for arraignment purposes.
In a letter shared on Facebook Thompson wrote, “In this particular case, I believe that it is hard to comprehend that Mr. Poore’s allegations are not worthy of segregating him from the public in the interest of safety. We are very lucky that nobody was hurt as a result of these incidents.”
During the robberies, Poole is alleged to have threatened the lives of two of the victims and physically grabbed the third.
“As Seneca County Sheriff, I feel an obligation to bring this to your attention in hopes that we can shed light on the lack of public safety discretion for our judges” he continued. “It is my hope that Mr. Poore does not hurt anyone else and attends his upcoming court appearance as required.”
