Saturday is Antonio Varacalli Day In Seneca Falls

Plaque honoring Antonio Varacalli, who died saving another, is adorned with bells on a green bridge in the Finger Lakes region.

One hundred and seven years ago today, Italian immigrant Antonio Varacalli jumped off the Bridge Street Bridge in Seneca Falls and saved a woman from drowning in the Cayuga-Seneca Canal. Varacalli died in the effort.

Many believe that story was on the mind of movie director Frank Capra for the 1947 movie “It’s A Wonderful Life.”

Tomorrow is Antonio Varacalli Day in Seneca Falls.   The celebration on the bridge begins at 11. A procession of local police, fire and sheriff’s departments, and the Bedford Falls Mediocre Marching Band will stop on the bridge. Also, there will be readings and the Varacalli Day proclamation.  Two of Varacalli’s great-great-nieces will attend the celebration.
