Rochester Regional Health (RRH) announced that Newark-Wayne Community Hospital (NWCH) has once again been designated a Baby-Friendly Hospital by Baby-Friendly USA, an international recognition honoring excellence in care for breastfeeding mothers and their newborns.

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that provide outstanding support for infant feeding and mother-baby bonding. NWCH joins a global network of over 20,000 Baby-Friendly facilities, including fewer than 500 in the United States.

Maintaining this designation requires hospitals to meet rigorous standards based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, evidence-based practices developed by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. These steps ensure mothers receive the guidance, support, and resources needed to make informed decisions about feeding during their baby’s critical early days. NWCH has held the Baby-Friendly status since 2015 and was among just 10% of designated hospitals this year to receive the honor without any corrective actions.

“This recognition reinforces our continued dedication to supporting families from the very beginning,” said Dr. Robert Cole, Chief Medical Officer for RRH’s Eastern Region. “The Baby-Friendly designation reflects our ongoing efforts to promote safe, evidence-based practices that support mothers—regardless of how they choose to feed their baby—while empowering them with knowledge and compassionate care.”
