A Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy suffered an eye injury as he attempted to arrest a Newark man for shoplifting at Wegmans.

Police were called to the Route 31 store in Perinton late Wednesday morning after 32-year-old William Cook allegedly left without paying for items he had with him. After deputies spotted him on a trail just west of the store, Cook took off on foot. After he was caught up with, Cook resisted and injured one of the deputies.

Cook is charged with assault, resisting arrest, and petit larceny.

The injured deputy was treated and released.
