A new sign at the end of the Canandaigua City Pier, erected last month, tells the story of the smallest wildlife management area in New York State.
You will remember it as “Squaw Island”, but like school mascots, the name had to be changed. Skenoh Island is the name posted for all to see on the new sign.
Canandaigua City officials say the new sign is the same as the old one, except for the name change. In the Mohawk language, the term “squaw” refers to a woman’s private parts and is considered derogatory.
