The Ontario County Sheriff’s Deputy seriously injured after being involved in a two-car crash on Routes 5 and 20 in Hopewell Monday night remains hospitalized in Rochester.
Sheriff David Cirencione provided an update Tuesday afternoon on Deputy Molly Turnbull. After undergoing surgery for internal injuries late Monday, Turnbull remains in Strong’s Intensive Care Unit in stable condition.
The driver of the vehicle Deputy Turnbull collided with, 35-year-old Ponell Kittles, of Canandaigua, suffered a leg injury and was also listed in stable condition at the same hospital.
A preliminary investigation determined Deputy Turnbull was responding to assist a State Trooper with a call for assistance with a resisting arrest call at around 8 p.m. Monday when her westbound patrol car collided with an eastbound SUV just west of Mumby Road. A firefighter and Sheriff’s Sergeant rescued Deputy Turnbull from her patrol car.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit and Investigative Division.
“We are thankful that both the deputy and Mr. Kittles are recovering,” said Sheriff Cirencione in a statement. “Our thanks to the first responders, medical staff, and community who have reached out to us in support.”
Deputy Turnbull began her Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy training back in February. Five months later she started her field officer training. In September, Turnbull graduated from the Academy’s Basic School after passing her classroom and field training hours.
