Hybrid Car Bursts Into Flames Outside of Canandaigua Home

Firefighters quickly contained a late-night vehicle fire that threatened a nearby home in Canandaigua, preventing the flames from spreading to the structure.

According to the Cheshire Fire Department, crews were called to Onnalinda Drive for a reported vehicle fire. Chief Brown arrived to find flames showing from the vehicle, which was parked just a few feet from a residence.

Engines 411 and 412 stretched an attack line to knock down the fire and deployed a second line to protect the home. Because of the vehicle’s close proximity to the structure and the risk of the fire extending into the house, the incident was upgraded to a structure fire response.

Automatic mutual aid from the Bristol Fire Department and additional assistance from the Veterans Affairs Fire Department were requested. Bristol crews established a water supply, laying about 1,600 feet of hose from County Road 16 to support suppression efforts.

Officials said the vehicle involved was a hybrid, which presents added challenges for firefighters, including high-voltage electrical systems that can remain energized, the potential for lithium-ion battery re-ignition, and the need for extended cooling and monitoring.

Crews checked the home for any fire extension but found none.

The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes. No injuries were reported, and damage to the residence was avoided.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Ontario County Emergency Management Office.
