The ringing of bells has officially returned outside local stores as the Geneva Salvation Army kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign on Nov. 15. The holiday fundraiser is the organization’s largest of the year, helping support its food pantry, youth programs, hot meal distribution, and emergency assistance services across Ontario and Yates counties.

Captain Manuel Sulka, who leads the Geneva corps, told FLX Local Media that volunteers will be stationed at Walmart locations in Geneva, Waterloo, and Canandaigua, as well as additional stores and businesses throughout the region. Many sites will also offer countertop kettles for shoppers who prefer to donate indoors.

“This is the right time to support all the programs we offer for free to the community,” Sulka said, noting that kettle donations directly fund programs used by local families year-round.

The Salvation Army is preparing for a surge in need this winter, especially as uncertainty continues around federal SNAP benefits. Sulka said the food pantry has already seen more visitors seeking groceries and hot meals.

The Red Kettle Campaign runs through Dec. 24. Anyone interested in volunteering as a bell ringer can find more information on the Salvation Army of Geneva Facebook page.
