A barn in the Town of Geneva was destroyed by fire late Tuesday night.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and the West Lake Road Fire Department were called to 668 Reed Road around 10 o’clock and found the structure fully engulfed in flames. The homeowner, Matthew Shirk, was home at the time but was not injured.

Fire crews from more than a dozen area departments helped bring the blaze under control, but the barn was a total loss.  White Springs, Geneva, Benton, Bellona, Stanley, Hall, Gorham, Seneca Castle, Penn Yan, Himrod, Oaks Corners, North Side, and Border City Fire Departments all responded along with Finger Lakes Ambulance.

Investigators determined that an electrical fence charger inside the barn caused the fire. Reed Road was closed during the firefighting effort.
