After more than four decades in public service, the longtime head of the Ontario County Planning Department is preparing to step down.

Tom Harvey has announced he will retire in July as director of the department, a position he has held since 2013. The 67-year-old Gorham resident has worked for Ontario County since 1985.

As the transition approaches, the Ontario County Board of Supervisors voted on Thursday to establish a six-member search committee to identify his successor. The Planning & Environmental Quality Committee endorsed the committee members at its Feb. 9 meeting.

County Administrator Chris DeBolt, who will chair the committee, proposed the group. The Finger Lakes Times reports that other members include Deputy Director of Human Services Lindsey Burgess, Economic Developer Ryan Davis, Commissioner of Public Works Christopher Day, Assistant County Attorney Nathan Thomas, and Planning & Environmental Quality Committee Chair Kristine Singer of Canadice.

The committee will review applications and résumés, conduct interviews, and recommend a candidate to the Planning & Environmental Quality Committee for consideration.
