Boxes of cigarettes went up in smoke Monday when a trailer caught on fire in Seneca County.

According to the Clyde-Galen Fire District, crews responded to the area of Mile Marker 326 westbound on the Thruway for the report of a detached trailer on fire.

While battling the blaze, personnel found hundreds of sealed boxes inside the trailer. Opening them to see if their contents were hazardous, they were surprised to find them full of packaged cigarettes.

The fire was later extinguished. Its cause is under investigation but it is believed to have been caused by a mechanical malfunction.
