The Cayuga Council of Chiefs has denounced the Cayuga Nation’s recent actions against the Union Springs Central School District and the Finger Lakes Drive-In.
The council opposes the leadership of federally recognized representative Clint Halftown.
In a news release, The Council of Chiefs also called upon the Bureau of Indian Affairs to reconsider Halftown’s leadership. They say Halftown’s appointment as the nation’s federally recognized representative in 2016 was “illegal and corrupt.”
The Council of Chiefs said the decision by the Halftown to disconnect the Union Spring School District from a natural gas well it had been using for more than 40 years was an “attack on the children and citizens of Union Springs.”
Halftown has effectively closed the Finger Lakes Drive-In after buying a neighboring property, saying the outdoor movie theater’s entrance and part of its screen are on that property and a lease with the previous owner to use it is “invalid.”
