The results of an independent forensic audit of the Ontario County Clerk’s Office to investigate delayed New York State report filings have been released.

The audit found that former Clerk Matthew Hoose stole approximately $453,000 from Ontario County over ten years starting in January 2012.

In February of 2023, the county’s Board of Supervisors issued a vote of no confidence in Hoose for repeatedly falling behind on making payments to the state and ordered an investigation. Less than a week later, the 54-year-old Hoose was found dead in his home, the victim of an apparent suicide.

A State Police investigation found Hoose was the only person involved in the embezzlement.
