If you drive through downtown Auburn, you may be wondering what construction crews are working on.

Jesse Kline with the Auburn Downtown BID has the answer. Speaking with Finger Lakes News Radio, she said the groundwork is being laid to install two sculptures in the downtown area.

At the corner of Genesee and South Streets, foundation work is underway for a sculpture depicting two stainless steel hands holding a star. Crews are making sure it will be structurally sound to install the piece.

Fabrication of the work will take place during the fall and winter with installation expected to take place next spring.

Foundation work is also being laid for a second sculpture at the corner of Lincoln and Williams Streets by the city’s parking garage. Kline described Sky Woman as “a bronze female figure whose arms are upstretched and she’s holding a gyroscope of colored moving rings. It’s a nod to the Native American creation story.” Further tying into the creation story, Kline said the base of the sculpture will be a turtle shell.

Installation of Sky Woman is expected to take place either this fall or early next spring.

Funding for both works comes as part of Auburn’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant.
