Sheriff Schenck: Inmate Mental Health a Growing Concern

Cayuga Sheriff Badge

There is a push to increase mental health services for inmates at the Cayuga County Jail.

Sheriff Brian Schenck says inmate mental health is a growing concern. To address that concern, he believes more staffing for the jail will be needed.

Schenck is looking to add a part time therapist to assist the social worker currently working in the jail through Cayuga County Mental Health.  This additional position would need to be approved and funded by the county legislature.

Schenck adds the difficulties being seen with mental health services at the jail are also being seen in the community as a whole.
