Cayuga County deputies arrested a 43-year-old man last week on a misdemeanor sex offense charge.

Edward Copes Jr., of Cayuga, was taken into custody Jan. 19 after deputies responded to a reported sex offense at a residence in the village around 3:53 p.m., according to Sheriff Brian Schenck. Investigators determined Copes had sexually touched a 19-year-old female without her consent.

Copes was charged with forcible touching, an A misdemeanor, and processed at the Cayuga County Jail. He was arraigned in the Court Assistance Program and had bail set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

He is scheduled to appear in Aurelius Town Court on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
