Despite the rain, people came to a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday to officially open a new pavilion at the Edward T Boyle Center in Auburn.
The pavilion will allow the seniors at the facility to enjoy a variety of outdoor programming throughout the warmer months.
Along with the ribbon-cutting came a dedication to a founding member of the center. Michael Long is the secretary of the center’s board. He told Finger Lakes News Radio that Vijay Mital has been critical to the facility’s success since its inception.
“Vijay was instrumental in creating the Boyle Center in 1978,” said Long. “He got the original group organized and submitted a grant to the federal government through HUD, which made the funding available to build the Boyle Center.”
Long added that Mital has been involved with the board ever since.
Mital was unaware that the pavilion would come with a plaque celebrating his legacy with the Boyle Center. He was also unaware that Mayor Jimmy Giannettino would be in attendance to proclaim July 15, 2024, as “Vijay Mital Day” in the City of Auburn.
Funding for the project came from a $65,000 grant from the City of Auburn, a $45,000 grant from the Emerson Foundation, and $15,000 from the Metcalf Foundation.
The Boyle Center is a 151-apartment facility senior center in the heart of downtown Auburn.
