As the weather improves, lake advocacy groups are preparing for the inevitable return of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) to the Finger Lakes.

The Owasco Watershed Lake Association is looking for volunteers to monitor for and report on HABs throughout Owasco lake.

Free training is provided online through the DEC and volunteers would be needed from July through late September/early October.

According to the association, more blooms have appeared on the lake’s east side; however, they have also been spotted in coves and shallows on the southwest and northwest areas of the lake.

If you’d like to volunteer or learn more, email Lisa Heaton at [email protected].
