Who will monitor the health of Owasco Lake and its watershed?

The Cayuga County Legislature voted against renewing an agreement with the Finger Lakes Institute which spearheads the research project.

The institute is part of Geneva’s Hobart and William Smith College but conducts research and keeps data about the lake’s health.

While the vote was largely along party lines, Republicans David Gould and Jim Basile joined the Democrats in voting in favor of the agreement. Michael Didio was not present at the meeting and Aileen McNabb-Coleman was unable to vote due to technical issues as she attended the meeting virtually.

The Finger Lakes Institute has been monitoring the lake since 2005.
