A new emergency order seeks to prevent asylum seekers from coming to Cayuga County.
The order, enacted by Legislature Chairman David Gould bars entities in the county from contracting with any municipality other than the county to provide shelter, food, transportation, or medical care to migrants without Gould’s express written permission. Those who violate the order face a fine of $2,000 per migrant per day of being in violation.
The order cites the efforts of other municipalities to transfer asylum seekers upstate without planning for the cost of providing them with vital services.
Back in June, Cayuga County was among a list of municipalities sued by New York City for trying to prevent the Big Apple from shipping asylum seekers upstate.
