Accurately determining corn whole plant moisture is important when harvesting for corn silage. Harvesting corn for silage too early (high moisture content) or too late (low moisture content) can affect forage yield, quality and silage fermentation.

Join hosts CCE Cayuga and Cornell’s South Central New York Regional Ag Team for this informative workshop, to be held on-site at the E. Merlin Wenger Dairy Farm in Port Byron.; Light refreshments will be served.

We will chop and measure moisture using NIR spectroscopy.

To Collect Samples for Testing:

1. Corn should be dented and at or near 1/2 milk-line

2. Collect 4-6 stalks/field from inside field.

3. Label field (If you know hybrid maturity & planting date, we will record it.)

We recommend 32 – 36% DM for bunk silos and bags, 35 – 38% DM for upright silos.

Remember proper length of cut, thorough kernel processing, and adequate packing are all critical in making quality corn silage.
